For those who don’t know her, Elena Curtoni is a young skier on the Italian women’s national team. Born in 1991, she moved up to the senior ranks just 1 year ago after winning the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Crans Montana.
On her debut, Elena Curtoni finished sixth, ahead of the favorite Lindsey Vonn. She wasted no time in proving that her “promotion” was well deserved.
Elena is also part of the Milka Ski Team and the Milka Ski Girls, a group of skiers sponsored by Milka that includes big names such as Maria Riesch and Tina Maze. Her place on the team is no coincidence: the famous chocolate brand chose her to represent Italy because she fully embodies the values Milka wants to convey, tenderness, simplicity and authenticity, and having met her in person, we can confirm that Elena is exactly like that!
When we were invited to attend the Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo, we had been told that we would have the chance to meet the great Elena and get to know her in person, and so it was.
The meeting with Elena Curtoni (see the photos) was a welcome gift at the start of our 3 days in Cortina. Unlike what usually happens with stars of this caliber, Elena introduced herself to us in a very simple and friendly way; sitting in the lounge of the Hotel Miramonti in Cortina, we were able to chat with her and ask her our questions.
And it was here that we discovered some unusual sides of her that we would never have imagined. For example, Elena told us that she was already walking on her own at eight months and put her skis on at the tender age of 2. An early development that also put her ahead at school, where she was 2 grades ahead of her peers. Then we discovered that Elena has no favorite skiing discipline: her ski training led her to train in all disciplines without distinction (a trait that is hard to find among Italian female skiers), and this preparation has made her love all-round skiing, whether it is downhill or slalom; in short, for Elena what matters is having skis on her feet!
We were even more surprised when Elena told us that her second passion is painting, which is just as important to her as skiing. Not just a hobby, but a passion she has always cultivated and that has always influenced her life plans. In fact, one of Elena’s dreams was to enter the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, but in the end skiing won out and she decided to continue her racing career.
Nevertheless, drawing, painting and art remain one of her greatest passions, which helps her take her mind off things and ease pre-race tension. With a sheet of paper and a piece of chalk, Elena creates “imaginary” people: her calling is not portraiture but rather taking the best from people, blending together the features that fascinate her to create new characters.
There is no doubt that Elena Curtoni has a splendid future ahead of her: she is a down-to-earth young woman, but with great ambitions and goals that she strives to reach through hard work and her passion for skiing. The results of the Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo (which we were able to watch live) confirm it: finishing twelfth in the Super G, Elena placed ahead of all the other Italian women, putting on an extraordinary show.
We wish her to keep it up and win a lot in the world of skiing!
