snow weather

end of summer under the snow

What a bizarre penultimate weekend of summer, with snow taking center stage across our Alps.

The weather front that hit the Alps brought snow down to 2,400 m a.s.l., whitening numerous peaks and creating a late-November rather than mid-September scene.

The drop in temperatures was dramatic: just think that in the preceding days the freezing level (0°C) was around 4,000 m a.s.l., and when the storm arrived it plunged to 2,400 m.

An even more unusual situation occurred in Friuli Venezia Giulia in the Tarvisio area, which saw snowfall as low as 1,700 m a.s.l.

During the night between the 13th and the 14th, snow also fell on Monte Lussari (Tarvisio), though rising temperatures in the following days brought rain; the situation was different at the top of Sella Nevea (1,800 m a.s.l.), where snow fell on and off throughout the weekend and can still be seen on the webcam.

forecasts indicate that further precipitation will be possible, even though sunshine should return around Thursday; however, starting Friday a new weather front will brush the Alps, though it is still too early to tell whether more snow will fall on our peaks.

For now, let’s enjoy the landscapes captured by the webcams.
