This morning brought a white awakening to the Alps, and this afternoon a winter baptism for the Apennines as well. Cold Arctic air has given the Italian mountains a taste of winter, with plunging temperatures and the first snow on the peaks down to medium altitudes.

As snow resumed falling in the Alps, the first snow came down in the Apennines, blanketing the mountains of central Italy in particular, led by the Gran Sasso.
Snow first affected the highest elevations before descending into the valleys, also whitening ski resorts at 1,400-1,600 m such as Rocca di Cambio and Ovindoli.

First Snow in Ovindoli

Just a light dusting so far, a white veil covering autumn woods and meadows, but it is on Thursday, October 23 that the storm will bring the largest snow accumulation.
Between 10 and 20 cm of snow are expected starting from 1,500 meters of altitude, and nearly half a meter of snow above 2,000 meters, particularly at Campo Imperatore where snow depth could approach 60 cm.

While the return of snow to the Alps is completely normal, in the Apennines these snowfalls are ahead of season, especially considering that snow has reached the valley villages and not just high altitudes.

However, for the lifts to open we will have to wait until late November or early December; for now, let’s enjoy the snow-covered landscapes.
