Snow returns to the Alps, snowfalls expected down to 2,000 m

First snow in the Alps

Everything is now ready to kick off the new ski season: snow cannons are already positioned on the slopes, ski lifts have been serviced, and hotels are ready to welcome the first tourists; the only major absentees this autumn are freezing temperatures and snow.
Even at the highest altitudes, the ski season is struggling to take off; over the weekend just ended, a few glaciers welcomed the first skiers of the season under almost summer-like sunshine and pleasant temperatures well above average.

However, this situation is set to change in the coming days with the arrival of freezing air from northern Europe and a passing weather front that will bring snow down to 2,000 m. On Tuesday, modest snowfalls are forecast, most likely across border ski resorts, with accumulations ranging between 5 cm and 10 cm of fresh snow; the snow line should settle around 2,000 meters of altitude, though snowfalls lower down (1,600-1,700 m) cannot be ruled out in some areas.
The most significant development, however, is the drop in temperatures accompanying this weather change: the arrival of cold air will bring conditions back to normal, lowering the snow line over the coming weeks.

The hope is that this weather system will lend a helping hand to the many ski resorts waiting for snow to open their lifts, prominent among them Solda and the Presena Glacier, still at the mercy of mild autumn weather that is holding back the start of the winter season.
