Golden Italy! Innerhofer first in the super-G

Italy takes the top step of the podium in the super-G at Garmisch in Germany. Winning the gold medal was Christof Innerhofer: the 26-year-old from Brunico skied a fantastic race, leaving the Austrian Hannes Reichelt and the Croatian Kostelic 60 hundredths behind him.

Innerhofer is also Italy’s flag bearer at these World Championships in Germany, and on the eve of the event he commented on the start of the Championships like this:

It was a strong emotion for me to carry Italy’s colours at the opening parade, and I believe we are all motivated to try to bring as many precious metals as possible to our medal tally. It is a source of pride to have been chosen as flag bearer and for me it is an extra motivation to do well in this edition of the World Championships

South Tyrol and all of Italy are celebrating a gold medal that brings hope for these World Championships. The South Tyrolean’s gold is in fact the first medal Italy has brought home, although the Italian women had already made their mark yesterday with an excellent performance by debutant Elena Curtoni.

Today’s was an interesting race with a dramatic twist: American Bode Miller lost a pole during his run, but despite great difficulty he did not retire and reached the finish with just one pole, placing 11th. This shows that these World Championships will be a constant fight for the podium.

But today the celebration is all for him, Christof Innerhofer, who has given us the most precious medal!
