Freezing cold and Snow in the Alps starting Friday, first snowfalls in the Apennines

Heavy snowfall

heavy snowfallsIf you haven’t done so already, we recommend switching over your wardrobe for the new season and making room for heavy jackets and sweaters: winter is at the door!

The above-average temperatures that brought sunny, pleasant days recently will soon be just a memory; weather experts say that starting Thursday a new phase will begin, characterized by bitter cold and snow down to low elevations in the Alps along with the first snowfalls in the Apennines as well. First there will be a drop in temperatures as the African high-pressure system retreats, followed by the arrival of a vortex of cold air sweeping down from the North Pole, bringing sharply falling temperatures from north to south.
As if that were not enough, a storm system will also arrive, ready to bring fresh snowfalls in the mountains above 1,000–1,200 m in the Alps and the first snowfalls of the season in the Apennines (even at lower elevations).
The first clouds will cross the Alps on Friday, bringing snow at high altitude (above 2,200 m), while temperatures will drop as the hours go by. On Saturday, the snow line could drop to 1,000 m in Trentino-Veneto and Friuli, while reaching around 1,500 m in the western sector (Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria).
On Sunday, temperatures will drop further, while snowfalls will shift southward, blanketing the Apennines in white for the first time since the end of last winter.

This taste of winter could open up new scenarios for the start of the new winter season and the opening of the first ski lifts.
