Now benefiting from the Atlantic storm system and the drop in temperatures are the ski destinations of the Apennines, which this morning woke up under a pristine white blanket.
This year the Apennines have experienced a very difficult season with very few snowfalls, plenty of rain, and temperatures well above average. From Emilia-Romagna to Abruzzo, lifts have been temporarily closed on several occasions due to lack of snow, and the risk of an early end to the season was in the air even in recent days.
However, the snowfalls of recent hours bode well for a grand finale to the season: it is snowing across most of the main ski areas—in Emilia-Romagna it is snowing at Cerreto Laghi, Monte Cimone, and Corno alle Scale; in Tuscany snowfalls are being recorded at Abetone and Doganaccia; and in Abruzzo at Campo Imperatore, Ovindoli, Campo Felice, and Roccaraso.
It is also snowing in Lazio on Monte Terminillo.
Snow has reached not only the high-altitude lifts, but also those lower down in the valleys, with heavier snowfall above 1,400 meters; accumulations expected for today could reach 20 cm, and the weather system will affect the Apennine sector for much of the week, bringing more snow.
In Central Italy, snowfalls are forecast through Thursday, after which fair weather will return here as well.

Snow conditions
While meters upon meters of snow fell in the Alps during December and January, rain battered the Apennines and snow was confined to the highest elevations. Despite the difficult snow conditions, among the most snow-covered ski areas we find Campo Imperatore in Abruzzo, Abetone in Tuscany, and Monte Cimone in Emilia-Romagna.
