Wintry May: Snow on the way at 1,000 meters in the Alps and Apennines

Snow at 1000 meters in the Alps in May

“Snow on the way at 1,000 meters”—a winter headline right in the middle of spring, or at least what should be spring. Just a few days ago we published a post dedicated to the “return of snow” when snow blanketed Alpine peaks above 1,800 meters, plunging resorts such as Passo del Tonale and Livigno back into full winter weather.
Now the Italian mountains are bracing for a new wave of icy air from the Arctic, bringing snow to both the Alps and the Apennines and a snow line down to 1,000 meters!

The cold air will mix with the storm systems that for weeks have been bringing heavy rains across Italy and snow at high altitude; this icy blast from Greenland will bring snow back to the mountains on Saturday, May 25.

Snowfalls will affect the entire Alpine arc from Aosta Valley to Friuli, with snow starting at 1,200 meters and possible snowfalls down to 1,000 m of altitude in some border areas. Forecast accumulations range from 5 to 10 cm, and the big news is that snowfalls will also extend to the Apennines—especially in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, where snow will once again blanket Monte Cimone and other ski resorts above 1,400/1,600 meters.

Long-range forecasts show no sign of any major change in the weather pattern: for the end of the month and early June, further storms and below-normal temperatures are expected—perhaps this 2013 will never see spring at all and will skip straight to summer.
