Alpbachtal & Wildschönau merge into a new mega ski area
Alpbachtal and the high valley of Wildschönau are two major ski areas in Austria, and the big news for the 2012/13 winter will be the linking of the two ski areas via an eight-passenger gondola.Alongside the existing eight-passenger “Pöglbahn” gondola departing from Inneralpbach, the new lift passes by the Pechalm mountain hut to reach the Schatzberg mountain in Wildschönau, linking a total of 145 kilometers of slopes and 47 ski lifts and propelling the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau resort into the top 10 largest ski areas in Tyrol.
New: the Wildspitzbahn and the highest café in all of Austria
Next season in the Pitztal will see the inauguration of the new Wildspitzbahn lift, an eight-passenger monocable gondola with heated seats covering a distance of more than 2 kilometers and 600 meters of vertical drop in just 5 minutes and 40 seconds. Starting in the 2012/2013 winter, from southwest of the Gletscherexpress top station at 2,840 meters, the Wildspitzbahn will carry passengers from the bottom station up to an altitude of 3,340 meters, home to the highest café in all of Austria. Panoramic windows and a sky-high suspended terrace offer breathtaking views of the summit of the Wildspitze (3,774 m) and the surrounding Alpine world of the Pitztal, encompassing more than 50 peaks above three thousand meters. The new Wildspitzbahn is scheduled to go into operation as early as October 2012.
New slopes and lifts in Kitzbühel and Stubai
Kitzbühel and Stubai are two of the most renowned resorts in Tyrol. While Kitzbühel represents Austria’s premier luxury skiing (the equivalent of Cortina in Italy), Stubai is one of Tyrol’s youngest and most energetic resorts thanks to its glacier, which makes it possible to organize and host major sporting events. This winter, the season in Kitzbühel and Stubai will kick off with new inaugurations. Brand-new ski lifts in both resorts and new ski slopes will make days on the snow even more comfortable and enjoyable. Investments have focused not only on ski lifts, but also on the artificial snowmaking system, which next winter will allow Kitzbühel to rely on a full 780 snow cannons.
