Snow drives wolves into towns and villages

Running wolf

Heavy snow has fallen on the Apennines in recent days: many towns and villages have literally been buried under the snow, and in many places there are more than 2 meters of fresh snow. The disruption has been enormous: from transport being brought to a standstill to shortages of basic necessities, as well as damage to power lines that left several families in the dark and without heating.

In such a difficult situation, a variable that nobody could have foreseen has been added: wolves coming down from the mountains into towns and villages. Snow is snow for everyone, not just for humans.
The heavy snowfalls have pushed deer and other animals down to the valleys in search of a little food. In recent days a group of deer was spotted in L’Aquila, wandering through the snow-covered streets.

A few days later the wolves came down: unable to hunt because of the very deep snow, they ventured towards towns and villages in search of a little food, or of the prey that had left the woods before them.

Wolves have been sighted in Abruzzo, in Lazio (as far as the Castelli Romani) and in Emilia. It must be said that wolves are afraid of humans and run away as soon as they sense their presence.

The arrival of wolves in towns and villages is frightening on the one hand, and on the other it shows that the Italian mountains can still count on a strong presence of these animals. In recent years sightings had become increasingly rare, whereas now it turns out that there are still a good number of them throughout the Apennine area.
