Snow on the way for the glaciers

“Snow on the way for the Italian glaciers”: reading this headline after a summer of 40 degrees leaves you speechless.
It seems absurd, but the glaciers that until a few days ago were in agony because of the extremely high temperatures (15 degrees at 3,000 m) are now getting ready to welcome the snow of late August.
The coming days will bring a temperature swing like never before: after the disturbance that brought thunderstorms, some of them severe, across the whole north, temperatures dropped by 10 degrees both in the mountains and on the plains. Frost has taken hold of the Alpine peaks again, with the freezing level falling below 3,000 m during the night.

But that’s not all…

This drop in temperature is just a foretaste of the disturbance that will sweep across northern Italy from Thursday night, bringing first rain and then snow above 3,000 m.
The snow will arrive on Friday, August 31, when temperatures will fall below zero and snow will cover the pastures from as low as 2,500 m across much of the north-eastern mountains.
Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli will be the regions most affected by this return of the snow, so Stelvio, Marmolada and Val Senales will once again put on their finest outfit: the white one.

After such a difficult summer, this strange news comes as “manna from heaven”, but it’s still too early to claim victory: winter is still a long way off, and this sudden snowfall is unlikely to completely wipe out this scorching summer.

What is certain is that we are witnessing temperature upheavals like never before!
