SNOW IN THE ALPS: up to 50 cm of snow in a single night and it keeps snowing

50cm snow in the Alps

alps snow 50cmForecasts were right on target for this first serious snowstorm of 2015, even though until last night the worst was feared due to the high temperatures still affecting the Alpine arc.
Overnight, a drop in temperatures brought values back to normal and the snow line down to 1,000 meters across almost all Alpine ski resorts, with heavy snowfall especially at medium-high altitudes.

This morning brought the long-awaited white awakening, with over 50 cm of fresh snow falling in just a few hours overnight at altitudes above 2,000 meters from Piedmont to Veneto.
Plenty of snow in Livigno (a classic), Madesimo, Prali, and across the entire Dolomite sector, with Madonna di Campiglio and Tonale buried by a blizzard. Snow fell across both sectors of Trentino, from Andalo and Bondone to Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme.
Snow in Alto Adige as well, with Solda starting to measure snow in meters rather than centimeters, and snow in the Prealps too, with 35/40 cm on Monte Verena (Asiago Plateau).

It Keeps Snowing

As we write, it continues to snow across much of the Alps, although the snowfall is gradually subsiding and will end towards the evening, leaving a magical white blanket over all the northern mountains.
Despite the swift passage of this storm, more fresh snow awaits us in the coming days starting as early as Monday; the cursed spell that until now kept snow away from the Italian mountains seems finally broken, and the time to have fun on natural snow seems to have arrived!

Apennines, snow is about to arrive

Not just the Alps, but also the Apennines will benefit in the coming hours from a drop in temperatures and snowfalls with the snow line at 1,000/1,300 meters; snow will therefore not be exclusive to the Alps, as from Tuscany to Lazio it will fall once again to blanket slopes already covered with the natural snow that fell in recent weeks.

As always, eyes are on the Live Snow Webcams from the slopes, the Snow Report, and the Weather Forecast for the coming days.

See you soon with new updates, Happy Natural Snow to everyone!
