Big Opening in Sölden, lifts open from Saturday, October 13

Sölden Glacier

Sölden Glacier Everything is ready on the Sölden glacier for the start of the 2012–13 season. On October 13 the slopes reopen in the Austrian ski resort, and skiers and snowboarders from all over Europe are champing at the bit as they await the first runs of the season.

This famous Ötztal ski area offers abundant snow and slopes in excellent condition from early autumn to early summer, making it one of the highest ski resorts in Tyrol and one of the most important in all of Austria. Kicking off the festivities will be numerous events welcoming snow lovers with ski tests and entertainment.

Festivities will begin on Friday the 12th with a party and presentation of the new winter season in the town’s venues, continuing on Saturday the 13th when the ski lifts will open their doors, carrying the first skiers and snowboarders of the season up to high altitude.
Slopes will be open on the glacier with parties and music from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM; accompanying the first runs will be experts from top European brands presenting and offering sneak-peek trials of their new ski and snowboard models with free Ski Tests. The first day of skiing will wrap up at 4:00 PM, but the party will continue late into the night in the town’s venues hosted by DJs and the Sölden crew.
Sunday, October 14 will be the final day of this mega opening dubbed “First Snow,” featuring plenty more runs on the glacier slopes and further Ski and Snowboard tests to try out the new winter gear.

Fresh snow

Snow conditions on the Sölden glacier are so good that the opening date was confirmed well in advance. Making this debut on the snow even better is the weather, which over the past few hours has brought some fresh snow at high altitude. A few centimeters of snow fell on the glacier today—not a huge amount, but certainly a welcome boost for the start of the season.

Going head-to-head with Sölden’s opening will be Stubai (see: Ski lift opening: winter in Stubai begins on October 13 ), the rival resort that announced its lift opening for the very same weekend. The two Austrian glaciers will battle it out with snow!
