Summer slalom at Passo San Pellegrino, still 6 meters of snow in the Dolomites

Craving summer, yet craving snow too. On Sunday, June 16, the “Slalom su la Levina”—meaning a slalom on an avalanche snowfield—is scheduled in Falcade (BL). Yes, you read that right: we are talking about snow, real snow for a slalom right in the middle of summer.
The summer race will take place on the “Levina di Vales Bas”, a tongue of snow and ice located on the lower section of Passo Valles in the heart of the Passo San Pellegrino-Falcade ski area, set against the magical backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

The Dolomites are thus offering one last patch of snow before everyone fully enjoys the sun and fair weather of the mountain summer. It promises to be an extraordinary celebration of sport, spectacle, and fun on this 600-meter-long descent over the remnants of an old avalanche—skiable this year thanks to the abundant winter snowfalls and the unusual weather conditions that marked the start of summer 2013.
There will be three race runs down a course featuring 15 giant slalom gates for this summer ski event organized with passion and dedication by the ski and snowboard instructors of the Scuola Equipe in Falcade.

“The base is guaranteed by at least 6–7 meters of snow that are still completely intact thanks to the winter snowfalls—conditions that allow participants to ski down this improvised slope in complete safety,” explains Fulvio Valt, director and instructor at the Scuola Equipe. “It is a truly unique event: it is not every year that you can organize a slalom in mid-June. The last time was back in 2009 with the slalom staged near Falcade on a tongue of snow and ice in Valle di San Lucano above Canale d’Agordo,” Valt continues. “Sunday’s race is open to everyone, though a good technical level is required. More than the competitive aspect, the spirit is to spend a cheerful day together celebrating skiing and fun, bidding a final farewell to winter and welcoming a summer that took a little longer to arrive this year.”

A party on the slope and after the race with polenta and luganega sausage for all participants!
Registration is open until Saturday, June 15 via the website www.scuolasciequipe.it
