The cold Atlantic weather system will bring a rapid and significant drop in temperatures, with snow falling down to 2000 meters above sea level and then down to 1500 meters in some resorts in the Aosta Valley and Piedmont.
Summer is therefore over for Cervinia and Livigno: the two snowy destinations will be able to enjoy the first snow ahead of the upcoming long winter season, and the white stuff could also pay a visit to lower-altitude resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio and Arabba.
Heavy snow at high altitude
Heavy snowfalls are expected especially at high altitude, where the weather front will dump snow right from the start thanks to lower temperatures. Below 2500 meters, snow will arrive only once the storm is underway due to the drop in temperatures; from 2000 meters down, only a light dusting is forecast, though enough to transform the Alpine landscape.
A blessing for the Glaciers
The summer that has just ended took a heavy toll on our Alpine glaciers: scorching temperatures and prolonged heatwaves reduced ice thickness to the bare minimum, significantly eating into snow reserves.
At high altitude, snow returned a few weeks ago thanks to the late-summer drop in temperatures, and this weather system could bring up to half a meter of snow above 3000 meters—an excellent contribution to give our beloved glaciers some breathing room.
