The first snow flurries were recorded overnight between Saturday and Sunday, but it was overnight between Sunday and Monday that the storm hit its stride, intensifying especially across the central and eastern Alps and bringing over 15 cm of snow at elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 meters.
The main beneficiaries of this weather system have been the mountain areas of Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, and Friuli, where forecasts call for snow down to low altitudes through Wednesday.
Snow in the Apennines, including Abruzzo
A welcome surprise came from Italy’s peninsular mountain range, the Apennines, which—just like the Alps—woke up under heavy snowfall.
From Emilia Romagna to Abruzzo, ski resorts were plunged into the heart of winter, with abundant snow across several winter stations including Abetone (Tuscany), Monte Cimone (Emilia Romagna), and Roccaraso (Abruzzo), which recorded more than 20 cm of fresh snow at high altitude.

3 days of snow
Weather experts forecast widespread snowfall in the Alps at least through Wednesday and snow in the Apennines until Friday. The snowfalls will be reinforced by a weather system arriving from the west, while temperatures will continue to drop as polar air masses sweep south, bringing snow all the way down to the plains of the Po Valley.
That is fantastic news for snow lovers: this coming weekend will feature perfectly snow-covered mountains, ideal for planning a ski trip or a snow excursion!
