Up to 1 meter of snow in the Alps, polar temperatures on the way!

“Heavy snowfall on the way“—and so it was! Snow has reached the entire Alpine arc and the Apennines, bringing winter back to our mountains.

Heavy snowfall in the Alps, over 150 cm in Aosta Valley

An exceptional snowfall over the past few hours still persists across most ski destinations. Some resorts saw only a brief spell of clear skies yesterday, with nearly continuous snow surpassing the threshold of 100 cm of fresh snow above 2,000 m.

At high altitude, more than a meter of snow has been recorded in several resorts across both the northwest and northeast.

Among the snowiest are certainly Cervinia with 185 cm, Gressoney with 150 cm, Alleghe 100 cm, Madonna di Campiglio 90 cm, Cortina 85 cm, Solda 80 cm, and Livigno 75 cm (see the full Snow Report).
You could call it going from 0 to 100 in just 2 to 3 days!

The snowfalls are giving slope crews a welcome challenge as they work non-stop to groom the runs in order to open the ski lifts as soon as possible and kick off a season that has been a struggle up to now.

Snow in the Apennines, including central Italy

Snow has also arrived in the Apennines—not only in the northern sector, but also in central Italian resorts such as Roccaraso.
Ski resorts in Emilia, Tuscany, Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio are covered in snow.
These are heavy snowfalls rather than mere dustings, with snow depths well over 50 cm in several resorts.

Polar temperatures arriving, lows of -20°C in Livigno

After the snow comes the deep freeze; it sounds like a dream, yet it is reality: locking in the snowpack across the ski resorts will be a blast of freezing air coming from Russia.
The cold front will reach Italy on Monday, November 23 and will linger over the peninsula for at least the entire week.
The forecast minimum temperatures are not record-breaking, but they will certainly make teeth chatter, especially in typically frigid areas such as the Asiago Plateau and Livigno—the Lombardy resort in particular could reach -20 degrees.

Snow + Freeze means the start of the season, so see you on the slopes!
