Winter at the door: the first snow arrives across the Alpine Arc

The month of November has arrived, bringing with it not only the first autumn chills, but above all the first real signs of unsettled weather that will accompany us throughout the winter season. The bad weather will begin as early as this weekend, with intense storm systems preparing to reach Italy as well. Forecasts show an approaching Atlantic weather front accompanied by southerly winds, which will keep temperatures relatively mild. Even though temperatures are still fairly high, significant snowfall is expected across the Alpine arc this very weekend. Let us take a closer look at what will happen over the next two days!

WEEKEND SNOW: THE FORECAST FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5

Let us start with Saturday, when widespread snowfalls are expected across the entire Alpine arc, reaching medium altitudes around 1,700 m. Looking more closely, in the northern Piedmont Alps we may see even colder temperatures, with snowfall down to 1,200 and 1,300 meters. In some areas, up to 30/40 cm of snow is expected to fall above 1,700 and 1,800 meters. Nor will the unsettled weather let up on Sunday, when a similar weather pattern is already forecast.

THE FORECAST FOR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6

If you want to plan a weekend in the snow, there is no better time to do so and escape city life: snowfalls will continue on Sunday as well, hitting the Alpine arc and, more intensely, the central-eastern Alps and Prealps. The snow line will remain steady during the day, with heavy snowfall around 1,700 m, as well as some snow showers below 1,500 m in the western Alps. Conditions could then worsen toward evening: a drop in temperatures is expected across the entire Alpine arc in the late afternoon on Sunday, when snow could reach down to 1,000 m or even lower, brushing hill altitudes. Around 30/40 cm of snow is expected between 1,500 and 1,700 m in the central-eastern sector.

Should the snowfalls be confirmed at the forecast intensity, this could well be the first true winter storm of the 2016/17 autumn-winter season. All we can do now is wait and hope that the snow finally arrives.
