Christmas is drawing near, and the atmosphere of this magical time of year is now part of every day. Among the countless traditions that have accompanied these days in recent years is the one, originating in the countries of the North, of Christmas markets, which are the ideal opportunity to experience the mountains in a new light.
Among the countless markets that fill our towns and cities, there is one in particular that is a point of reference for this tradition: the Christmas market of the city of Bolzano, in South Tyrol.
It takes place in the streets of Bolzano’s centre, from November 25 to December 23, and has always brought together Mediterranean and Central European culture, in a magical meeting of traditions and cultures. Here, where North and South merge, among the romantic arcades and elegant period buildings, you can breathe an ancient tradition dating back to the Middle Ages: that of trade. All this is seasoned with the typical ingredients of Christmas: countless lights illuminating the streets of the centre, traditional songs drifting through the air and all the flavours of the festive season.
The Catinaccio and the Dolomites provide the backdrop to an exciting and evocative route.
Piazza Walther will host the wooden huts of the “Christikindmarkt”, where more than 80 exhibitors will offer typical products: from glass decorations to wooden and ceramic ones, from gift ideas rooted in a genuine craft tradition to gastronomic specialities.
Anyone with a sweet tooth simply has to taste the famous typical cake: Bolzano’s “Zelten”.
New for Christmas 2011 is the market dedicated exclusively to children, which will be set up in a reserved area with child-sized stalls. The little ones will be directly involved through entertainment designed especially for them and will take part in activities: baking Christmas biscuits, making decorations for the tree, storytelling, crafting decorations and products…
During the market period, the municipality of Bolzano has surprises and side events in store for all visitors, to show the city in all its beauty.
