At Nissan Skipass, A.M.S.I. celebrates its 50th anniversary

amsi press conference It was a rainy day in Milan on November 18, 1963 when, in the presence of notary Dr. Attilio Raimondi, the “six” founding fathers gathered. They were Gianpaolo Frigerio, representing the Regional Ski Instructors Association of Aosta Valley, Piero Bosticco, representing the Western Alps Association, Vittorio Carpineti, representing the Central Alps Association, Alberto Demetz of the Trentino Alto Adige Association, Renato Valle of the Veneto Association, and Guerrino Frigerio, representing the Central-Southern Association. On that day, reviving an earlier idea of Piero Oneglio, former FISI president, before notary Raimondi, AMSI—the Italian Ski Instructors Association—was born, giving shape to the “Italian Ski School.” Half a century has passed since then, yet the passion and founding principles have remained unchanged while adapting over time to the evolving needs of the market and tourism.

The 2013 edition of Nissan SKIPASS holds special significance for the Presidency and Board of Directors of the Association, as it coincides with its 50th anniversary. For this occasion, A.M.S.I. has organized a series of initiatives to honor this historic milestone for Italian skiing. For example, it is present with a booth that serves as a full-fledged information hub for both the general public and snow professionals. Specifically, winter sports enthusiasts and families can gather information on the activities and services offered by the Italian Ski School for the 2013/14 season and view evocative historical photos, while snow professionals can learn in detail about the partnerships signed by A.M.S.I. (such as 3Tre, Yokohama, and Volvo), all the representational work carried out to support ski instruction, and the promotional initiatives put in place.

The highlight of A.M.S.I.’s presence at Nissan SKIPASS 2013 was reached with the Press Conference on Friday, November 1, 2013, titled “50 Years of Emotions,” a moment that wove a common thread connecting past, present, and future.
Also attending the conference was FISI President Flavio Roda, who highlighted the importance of AMSI in the world of Italian skiing and the leading role it plays in promoting the sport among younger generations; he also reaffirmed the Italian Winter Sports Federation’s commitment to continuing the vital collaboration between the two organizations, which this pre-season saw the release of “Skiing for Children,” the new multimedia guide assisting instructors in teaching skiing to young children through dedicated methodologies—moving away from a purely technical approach toward a path that turns skiing into a game and conveys lessons simply yet effectively.

During the event, several historic milestones achieved by A.M.S.I. as a professional association were recalled, followed by the presentation of the special A.M.S.I. 50th Anniversary Membership Card and the announcement of the main activities scheduled for the 2013/14 season, such as the Demo Team Italia run during the Italian Alpine Ski World Cup races. Furthermore, an emotional highlight was the tribute and presentation of awards to the A.M.S.I. Presidents who led the Association through its “first 50 years.” Finally, the event featured the public unveiling of the new adult and child Skill Classification Cards, linked to the F.I.S.I. teaching manuals, and the official launch of Leo Monthy, the new A.M.S.I. Mascot and brand-new ambassador for Italian youth skiing.

Happy Anniversary A.M.S.I., and here’s to 100 more!
