Mid-October snow in the Alps, snowfalls above 1,900 m

St. Moritz mountains

mid-october-snow alpsThe mid-October week has begun under the sign of snow in the mountains—a taste of winter reminding us that the ski season is now just around the corner.
Snowfalls began on Sunday evening with snow on the glaciers and a steadily dropping snow line. However, it was overnight and this morning that the weather system crossing the Alps delivered its biggest contribution. At Passo Stelvio, heavy snowfalls have been recorded with at least 20 cm of fresh snow, along with snow on the Adamello—where the Presena glacier is stocking up ahead of winter—and snow on the Marmolada from top to bottom, reaching down to 2,000 m.
Snow also fell at Passo del Tonale and on the slopes of Temù, with flakes down to 1,800 m.
Widespread snowfalls stretched from west to east, with the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa under almost winter-like snowfall down below 2,000 m and bitter cold on the glaciers.

Abundant snow also fell in the village of Cervinia, with the slopes of Plan Maison covered in snow just like in mid-winter. Snow fell in the valleys at the foot of Monte Rosa starting from 1,800–1,900 m, accompanied by intense cold above 2,500 m.
The snow that hit the mountains of the Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Trentino also reached Alto Adige, though at higher elevations: no snow at 2,000 m, but only above 2,500 m (except in a few areas), and the same applies to Veneto and Friuli.
Like Lombardy, Trentino is also celebrating the arrival of the first snow at 2,000 m, welcomed by the valleys of the Brenta Dolomites with the first snow on the slopes of Campiglio, Pinzolo, and Andalo-Paganella.

Still snowing

It continues to snow in the mountains with a variable snow line and the first snow showers reaching down to 1,800 m. This autumn weather system will continue to bring snow until early tomorrow afternoon, when the clouds will leave the Alps.
After that, a rise in temperatures is forecast, which will melt the snow at lower elevations while leaving plenty of fresh snow for the glaciers that have opened their lifts in recent days (Cervinia, Sölden, Stubai, Mölltal; see all other lift opening dates).
