Incredible as it may seem, Cortina is reopening its lifts to kick off summer skiing!
It might sound like a prank, yet the news comes directly from the Freccia nel Cielo lift company, which has decided to reopen the Bus Tofana chairlift and restart summer skiing at Ra Valles (2,200–2,700 m above sea level).
The last time skiers carved turns in mid-summer on the slopes of Cortina was a full 12 years ago, back in 2001, when a record number of skiers turned out during the summer season.
This miracle is the result of one of the snowiest winters in recent years, a spring with temperatures almost constantly below freezing, and a summer that has yet to arrive at high altitude. The nearby San Pellegrino valley also got to experience the thrill of a day of summer skiing, but Cortina’s case tops them all with an opening that will continue for as long as snow conditions allow.
The official statement from the lift company reads:
It is therefore official that starting June 29, for as long as snow conditions permit, skiers will be able to ride up on the cable car starting at 6:30 AM and ski from 7:00 AM until 9:30 AM.
The ski pass costs €45 for adults and €25 for juniors up to 14 years of age and Ski Club members; the ticket includes both lift access and brunch at Rifugio Ra Valles.
All that is left to do is dust off your skis and head up to Cortina to take part in a truly once-in-a-blue-moon event!
