Lift openings: 10 resorts where you can already ski without waiting for winter

Skiing September 2014

skiing september 2014The month of September marks the end of the summer season and the start of the winter season for high-altitude ski resorts. Summer skiing ends in some resorts while continuing in others, and new ski destinations join in to kick off the winter season.

Those who cannot live without snow and want to treat themselves to a day of skiing even in September can opt for one of these 10 ski destinations:

Stubai

The start of the season was scheduled for September 20, but favorable snow conditions allowed the Stubai ski area to open its lifts ahead of schedule and officially kick off the 2014/2015 winter season.
Skiing is open on the slopes of the Eisjochferner glacier and the Windachferner glacier.

Solden

The same scenario as Stubai: a glacier in good condition and an early lift opening. Here in Solden (host of the first seasonal stop of the Alpine Ski World Cup), the season started on September 8.
Snow conditions are optimal thanks to a mild summer that helped preserve the glacier at its best and thanks to the modern snowmaking systems installed even at high altitude.

Hintertux

The only ski resort open year-round alongside Plateau Rosà, Hintertux is the glacier that never closes. One of the best high-altitude Austrian ski resorts, it allows you to ski 365 days a year without a single day off.

Saas Fee

With a maximum altitude of 3,600 meters, Saas Fee is, along with Zermatt, one of the benchmarks for summer skiing in Europe. There are a full 20 km of slopes on the glacier, open non-stop from mid-July through the following April.

Plateau Rosà

The glacier at the foot of the Matterhorn continues its ski season non-stop with perfect slopes at an altitude approaching 4,000 meters.
It is not accessible from Cervinia (which closed its lifts in early September), but it can be reached from Switzerland thanks to the Zermatt lifts.

Passo Stelvio

The last bastion of Italian summer skiing, the Stelvio glacier seems to have appreciated the mild summer: the slopes are still well covered by snow from last winter’s season, and the runs have been blanketed several times by fresh snow that fell even during the “warmest” months.
Once again this year, the ski season will continue throughout September and all of October, ending only on November 2.

Val Senales Opening

In Alto Adige, the ski season has begun with the early opening of the Val Senales Glacier: ski lifts are open from September 19 from 7:15 AM to 1:00 PM, with the Big Opening scheduled for October 5, 2014.

Pitztal, Kaunertal and Molltaler

Three more Austrian glaciers opened their doors over the weekend of September 19–20–21, ahead of schedule. For more information: Austria: 3 more glaciers open their lifts early

The ski offering is not bad at all: from east to west, there are plenty of destinations where you can satisfy the urge to get back on the slopes.
