Winter tires only and no snow chains, the proposal in the Senate
An episode from a few weeks ago was the amendment in the Senate which provided for the introduction of mandatory snow tires on all cars in all areas of Italy throughout the winter, a rule very similar to the one already in force with the difference that this new legislative initiative provided for a ban on the use of snow chains. If this amendment had passed, motorists across Italy (including the south and the islands) would have had to equip themselves with thermal tires without being able to resort to simpler and cheaper snow chains. Fortunately (for us consumers) the proposal lapsed and the whole thing came to nothing.
On Mondo Neve we have continued to cover the topic by publishing the numerous ordinances that vary from area to area and also by type of road (municipal, provincial, state, and motorways); a few weeks ago we published in-depth reports with all the mandatory chain or tire ordinances for the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Abruzzo.
The State Police publishes the complete list of ordinances
Finally, the State Police Snow Plan for winter 2012-2013 has been published with information and specifications on the measures to be taken in the event of snow and a detailed list of all the ordinances requiring the use of winter tires or chains on board.
The Police snow plan is the reference point for all motorists as it contains all the official ordinances in force across the national territory.
You can download the list of ordinances directly from this link (PDF file size 456kb)
Compared to last year there was a delay in publication, probably due to the fact that this winter 2012-2013 counts almost 70 pages of different ordinances from region to region and from area to area. Despite the amount of information, the attachment is easy to consult: the ordinances are grouped by region and by road type, and each road section indicates the start and end dates of the requirement.
For more information leave a comment below; we remind you that the attached file was created by the State Police in collaboration with Anas and Aiscat, to whom our thanks go for shedding light on the tangle of road ordinances.
